What's on in May?

It’s hard to believe that it will be May next week! Check out some of the incredible events coming up over the first month of summer:

1. Galway Theatre Festival, 3rd to 11th May

First up, we have the Galway Theatre Festival. This is a must for anyone who is interested in theatre, and any time spent in Galway is always a plus!

Two performances which we think will be incredible are:

  • Ní Liomsa an Teach Álainn Seo (This Is Not My Beautiful House) - an invitation to non-Irish and Gaelic speakers alike to experience the language through stories of shared understanding.

  • Curious Pigeons - A flock of unruly pigeons explore the city streets, providing street entertainment for the general public in random pop-up improvisations and games.

2. International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival, 6th to 19th May.

In its 21st year, the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival is a celebration of love, diversity, and creativity that brings together some of the best LGBTQ+ theatre talents from around the world.

You can check out the programme here - https://gaytheatre.ie/programme-2024/

There is an incredible array of performances happening over the two weeks. One that we would love to see is ‘MNÁ’ - A series of independent monologues charting the changes in the status of women through the 20th century, the crossroads of the 1970s and the promise for ‘Mná na hEireann’ (women of Ireland) around the election of Mary Robinson as President of Ireland in the 1990s. Starring Flo Mc Sweeney, Brenda Mc Sweeney and Elaine Moore O’Donohue in a new treatment by Brian Merriman.

3. MU Arts and Minds Festival, 9th to 11th May, Maynooth.

This “feast of culture” is held annually around Maynooth campus.

It is the campus celebration of the best in the Irish and international arts and culture, welcoming the university and wider community, alumni, students, and staff to join for live and in-person arts events.

There’s something for everyone this year with opera, film screenings, photography exhibitions and a wide array of performances and workshops within ‘An Fhéile Bheag’, which is all done through Irish.

4. Wellfest, 11th and 12th May, Kilmainhaim.

This is Europe’s largest outdoor health, fitness and wellness festival!

They aim to have something for everyone, with areas dedicated to fitness, yoga, Pilates, mental health, healthy food, and strength training.

This is set to be a high energy day, with plenty to do and see.

5. Killiney beach yoga, 11th May 9:30am, Killiney beach.

Now that the summer months are upon us, beach yoga in Killiney is back!

9:30 on the 11th May, bring your yoga mat, water bottle, and some layers (it’s not that warm yet!)

This would be an amazing way to start your weekend, imagine how refreshed and calm you would be!

6. Dublin Dance Festival, 14th to 25th May.

Dublin Dance Festival “champions the potential of the moving body to unlock new perspectives on our changing world”.

They aim to present the best Irish and international dance performances across the city every May.

There is a huge amount of performances across the two weeks, so check it out!

7. International Literature Festival Dublin, 17th to 26th May.

Now in their 26th year, International Literature Festival Dublin (ILFD) is Ireland’s leading literary event.

In readings, conversations, debates, screenings, guided walks, events, podcasts and broadcasts, they are proud to celebrate the very best Irish and international fiction and non-fiction authors, poets, lyricists, playwrights and screenwriters.

This includes events for kids and families, professional development to enhance skills, and a fringe programme for those interested in the crazier side of life!

8. Féile Binn Éadair, 24th to 26th May.

This is a ‘mostly free’ Irish and traditional music festival in Howth.

See the full line up below, it’s shaping up to be a great one!
